THE POWER OF EMPOWERMENT
At just ten years old, Joy* was sexually abused in front of a camera for foreign sex offenders to watch online. After being rescued and restored, she bravely testified in court. Almost a decade later, the trial is still ongoing. Will you stand with Joy?
Thank you for supporting “THE POWER OF EMPOWERMENT” charity exhibition jointly presented by Kambal Gallery and IJM. This exhibition is in support of IJM’s mission to end Online Sexual Exploitation of Children (OSEC) in the Philippines, where research showed nearly 500,000 children being exploited in 2022 alone. 10-15% of the proceeds from the art exhibition sale will be donated towards the mission.

STAND WITH JOY
Joy grew up in a happy family and she has fond memories of the time spent with her parents and siblings. Over time though, Joy’s parents were struggling to support the family and made the hard decision to seek better job opportunities abroad, leaving 8-year-old Joy in the hands of any relative who would take her in.
Preying on her vulnerability, Joy’s aunt lured Joy and other children into her home where they were sexually exploited in front of a camera. At certain points, their abuse was live streamed to paying customers around the world.
Joy recalls, “I was surprised when she asked us to go naked, and then she said she will take pictures of us together. I was so scared, nervous and confused…but we were left with no choice but to follow her instructions.”
STAND WITH JUSTICE
In 2013, IJM supported Philippine authorities to arrest Joy’s aunt and rescue Joy and more than 10 other children. She gradually recovered through IJM’s aftercare program and persevered to become a registered social worker.
Joy was the first survivor from her case to bravely testify against her aunt despite grave intimidations and death threats. After almost a decade-long fight for justice, Joy’s court case is still ongoing, but she has high hopes that justice will be served because she knows there are many people backing her up. Joy is relentless in advocating for the transformation of the public justice system to protect all children from online sexual exploitation.
