Globally, the crimes of human trafficking generate an estimated annual revenue of US$150 billion – almost half of Google’s annual revenue in 2023.
Technologies are constantly evolving but so do the forms of human trafficking – innocent job seekers are tricked and trafficked to scam compounds in Southeast Asia, forced to scam people and endure violent physical and mental abuse if they don’t meet their “KPIs”.
In the Philippines, children are forced to perform sex acts, or they are sexually abused by traffickers who live-stream the abuse to customers from anywhere in the world willing to pay and direct the sexual abuse from their own homes.
The needs to rescue victims, restore survivors, restrain criminals and strengthen local justice systems to ensure effective law enforcement and sustainable protection – are urgent and critical.
