Two women from Ukraine recently received support from IJM after they were\u00a0trafficked to Romania and forced to work without pay.<\/strong><\/h2>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Living amidst the ongoing war and severe economic instability, Eve* and Olga* were both\u00a0tricked by the same woman \u2013 their<\/strong>\u00a0neighbor and friend.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Eve\u2019s neighbor invited her to visit another location in Ukraine, Eve didn\u2019t think much of it. Instead, Eve found herself being\u00a0driven across the border into Romania and taken to an unknown apartment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI immediately started breaking down,\u201d Eve said.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cI asked, \u2018Where are we going?\u2019 She said, \u2018Be quiet. You\u2019ll see soon.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Inviting Olga on holiday to Bulgaria, the suspect then drove Olga to Romania and forced her to work with Eve for no pay.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

For months, Eve and Olga were forced to do hard physical labor while enduring constant verbal abuse and threats.<\/strong>\u00a0The women were given little to eat, and their passports and bank cards were confiscated.<\/p>\n

Eve remembers being physically and emotionally exhausted<\/strong>. With no money and no legal documents, they were trapped.\u202f\u201cI was mostly locked up for two months. Locked up!\u201d recalls Eve.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Olga and Eve\u00a0managed to<\/strong>\u00a0escape and sought help from the local authorities<\/strong>\u00a0in Romania, who referred the women to IJM.<\/p>\n

Karolina, IJM\u2019s Protection Officer in Romania, was the first to meet the women. \u201cIt was very late and both women were extremely tired and quite stressed,\u201d she recalls.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cNeither of them knew where they were exactly.\u201d\u202f<\/strong><\/p>\n

IJM provided the women with much-needed safe accommodation, medical and psychological care.<\/strong>\u00a0The team also helped the women testify with the Romanian authorities.<\/p>\n

When Eve and Olga were safe to return home,\u00a0IJM accompanied them to the border and arranged their travel with the Ukrainian authorities<\/strong>, ensuring that the social services they needed would continue at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe women were thrilled to go back home because those months had been\u00a0<\/strong>the longest they had ever been away from their families,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0says Karolina. \u201c[Their return] was a significant moment \u2013 they could start a new life. They no longer needed to be scared.”<\/p>\n

Having gathered sufficient evidence,\u00a0investigators served the perpetrator with a notice of suspicion of human trafficking.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Olga and Eve are deeply relieved to know that the perpetrator will not be able to exploit them again.\u00a0The suspect is currently in a temporary detention center and could see up to 12 years in prison.<\/strong><\/p>\n
