Crystal is the eldest of three siblings, living in the Philippines.<\/p>\n

Growing up, her mother, a high school graduate, operated a little store off their house. Her father worked on construction jobs.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The family was comfortable \u2013 Crystal and her little brothers had enough to eat and were able to study in a decent school.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why what happened next came as such a shock.\u00a0Crystal never imagined what her mother was prepared to do for money.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Influenced by other traffickers in their community, Crystal\u2019s mother took a photo from her 17-year-old daughter\u2019s social media account.<\/p>\n

Using the photo to entice men online, she abused Crystal for sex offenders around the world to direct and livestream.<\/h3>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

After months of online sexual exploitation, authorities received a tip-off about Crystal\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n

In back-to-back operations,\u00a0Crystal\u2019s mother and four other local women were arrested.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eleven children were brought to safety that day, including Crystal.<\/h3>\n

\u201cAt that time, instead of being able to manage my own feelings, I needed to comfort the other children who were rescued with me \u2013 my cousins and neighbours who were younger than me,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Crystal recalled.<\/p>\n

The Philippine National Police, together with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, brought Crystal to a shelter, where she was able to begin processing what her mother had done.<\/p>\n

\u201cI began to wonder what if my rescue had come later.<\/em><\/h3>\n

“We know of human greed, especially when they see that you can earn money in this scheme. And if her greed grew and grew, she might be doing something worse and more harmful \u2013 if not with me, maybe with others.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Crystal received vital aftercare services from IJM and partners.<\/strong>\u00a0She stayed in shelters where, with the support of social workers and house parents, she felt able to move forward and continue her education.<\/p>\n

Crystal also found friends \u2013 some of whom were members of the\u00a0Philippine Survivor Network, a group of survivors who support one another while advocating for better protection for children.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Crystal decided to join the group:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

With IJM\u2019s legal support, Crystal\u2019s perpetrator (in this case her mother) was sentenced to fifteen years in prison.<\/p>\n

Crystal has since grown into a confident young woman who dreams of finishing college:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Crystal from the past was quiet and very dependent on her parents. She would not come out of her shell.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

“Now, I\u2019m able to speak in public and have acquired new skills. I\u2019m more confident to face others. I think that the changes in my life are huge,\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Crystal described.<\/p>\n
