Back in 2012,\u00a0Ranjita<\/strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0family were forced to migrate for work after a drought devastated their community.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ranjita (12), along with her sisters Reema (14) and Sujata (10), travelled with their parents to work in a brick kiln. What waited for them was a total nightmare.<\/p>\n

“I know that this is a problem in my community\u2014this problem of bonded labour. I myself was a labourer.\u202f”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The kiln owner and his henchmen would force the workers out of their homes before sunrise to make thousands of bricks.<\/p>\n

Ranjita remembers how the owner\u2019s men would repeatedly threaten her parents, saying they would\u00a0give\u00a0electric shocks and peel their skin\u00a0if they were not found working.<\/p>\n

She remembers, \u201cAfraid that they would harm my parents, my sisters and I would turn as many bricks as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

After months of abuse,\u00a0government officials arrived to bring\u00a0<\/strong>Ranjita\u2019s family to safety.<\/strong>\u00a0But the kiln owner threatened to harm the children and\u00a0tried to hide them away.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ranjita shares, \u201cWe were taken to the forest and kept there for many hours\u2026He hit us when we were reluctant to go, and we started to cry.\u201d\u202f<\/strong><\/p>\n

Local officials began a diligent search of the area. To the families\u2019 relief, they found the children in the woods and\u00a0reunited them<\/strong>\u00a0with their parents in freedom.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ranjita\u2019s family were finally able to return home.\u202f\u202fAs they resettled, the government and local civil society organizations helped the survivors receive much-needed government benefits.<\/p>\n

The kiln owner and two of his associates were arrested. Ranjita\u2019s parents travelled three times to testify in court until the\u00a0three accused were convicted and sentenced to two years in jail<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

With that painful chapter closed, Ranjita worked her way through high school. But personal success wasn\u2019t enough for Ranjita.\u00a0She started\u00a0<\/strong>thinking about how she could help other people like herself.\u202f<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reflecting on the support she\u2019d received from IJM staff, she said, \u201cWe felt we could always approach them for help because they are good people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Interacting with IJM staff<\/strong>\u00a0inspired Ranjita to consider a career in social work<\/strong>. Her opportunity arrived in mid-2020 when the world was suddenly faced with the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

The strict lockdowns left IJM\u2019s aftercare staff unable to reach thousands of survivors living in rural villages. Many families had lost regular work during the lockdowns and needed extra support to avoid accepting risky job offers that could result in trafficking.<\/p>\n

To reach these families,\u00a0IJM\u00a0<\/strong>invited local, budding survivor leaders to serve their own community as Covid Relief Coordinators (CRCs).<\/strong>\u00a0With training, support, and a small salary, IJM believed these leaders could more quickly meet their urgent needs.<\/p>\n

IJM staff saw Ranjita\u2019s potential and invited her to help pilot the programme.\u00a0She says with a smile, \u201cI grabbed the offer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ranjita helped educate\u00a0<\/strong>families about the risks of migration and human trafficking.<\/strong>\u00a0Over time, she began helping survivors advocate for all kinds of government programmes and benefits\u2014from small business loans to ID cards to higher education.<\/p>\n

Ranjita says, \u201cIt gives me a lot of joy.\u00a0I have worked in other professions, but there\u2019s nothing as fulfilling as this one.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Today Ranjita is a confident, articulate, and fearless young woman. Ranjita has leveraged her experiences to become a\u00a0prominent leader in\u00a0<\/strong>her local survivor group in the Released Bonded Laborers Association (RBLA).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mentorship from IJM has made a significant difference in Ranjita\u2019s life and how she sees herself\u2014especially as a young woman with the opportunity to lead in her own community.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is very rare for girls in my community to engage in work like this,\u201d Ranjita explains.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cBut my mother has been my biggest support.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am amazed to see the transformation in Ranjita,\u201d says IJM staff. \u201cI visited the family in 2021 and saw Ranjita for the first time. She was extremely shy.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo years hence, I am meeting a completely transformed Ranjita. She is standing before officials, police and government sharing her story confidently. She is being interviewed by journalists.\u00a0I have not witnessed a transformation like this ever before in my life.\u201d\u202f<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cA lot has changed in my life,\u201d Ranjita explains confidently. \u201cI have to talk to the community, talk to the officials. It has made me more confident. My exposure to government offices has helped me broaden my personality and become a go-getter.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n
