        "rendered": "<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kenya, April 2026 \u2014&nbsp;Kenya\u2019s High Court has awarded compensation to survivors and families affected by police violence during 2023 protests \u2013 bringing long\u2011awaited accountability and justice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The High Court found the National Police Service liable for the excessive force used against 28 people who were shot dead or severely injured while protesting the high cost of living in Kisumu between March and July 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt goes without saying that having suffered death and various injuries through the deprivation of their rights and freedoms, they are entitled to compensation,\u201d said Justice Alfred Mabeya, Judge of the High Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case was brought by survivors from Kisumu, together with IJM, the Law Society of Kenya (Kisumu Chapter), and other human rights organisations. Survivors shared their first-hand accounts of police violence. Evidence showed that police operations led to nine deaths \u2013 including that of a child \u2013 and left 18 other people with serious, life\u2011changing injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This decision by the High Court sets an important precedent and marks a major step forward for justice in Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor far too long, survivors have faced the disheartening reality of inaction from the State, but this decision signifies that their pursuit of justice is valid, essential, and more importantly, consequential,\u201d shares Vincent Chahale, Country Director of IJM Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a country where less than 2% of police\u2011related extrajudicial killings arrive in court (Missing Voices, 2024), this ruling signals vital progress. IJM and partners remain committed to strengthening justice systems, protecting communities, and ensuring those who abuse their power are held to account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis judgment gives survivors hope \u2013 but our work is not finished.
