Bangkok, Thailand, Novemeber 3, 2025 \u2014\u00a0<\/strong>More than 1,500 foreign workers have crossed into Mae Sot, Thailand, following a major raid in KK Park, located in Myawaddy Township, Myanmar. The operation, led by the Myanmar military in mid-October, targeted one of the region\u2019s most notorious hubs for cyber scam operations, forced labor and trafficking.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to initial reports, the group comprised individuals from more than 28 nationalities, including 482 Indians, 220 Filipinos, 193 Chinese, 135 Vietnamese, 133 Ethiopians, and 102 Kenyans. Smaller groups included Indonesians, Burmese, Liberians, Bangladeshis, Laotians, Kazakhs, Thais, Nepalese, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, Taiwanese, and several others from various African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many are now camping in open spaces under the Friendship Bridge and near the Mae Sot airport while awaiting screening. The Thai government and NGOs are providing food, water, and medical assistance running out given the scale of the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thai immigration authorities are currently conducting identity verification and victim screenings to determine who among the group are victims of trafficking and eligible for protection, assistance, and repatriation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, IJM Thailand has deployed a team to Mae Sot to assist victim screening and response efforts at the border. IJM staff are providing translation services, assisting survivors, and working with local officials to support the Thai government Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDT) tasked with screening and identifying victims of trafficking. IJM continues to coordinate closely with Thai authorities and frontline NGOs to help ensure victims are identified, protected, and safely repatriated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe situation in Mae Sot is concerning, but the Thai government and NGOs are doing everything they can to meet potential trafficking victims’ urgent needs and coordinate with embassies for their safe return home,\u201d said Andrew Wasuwongse, Country Director of IJM Thailand. \u201cIt\u2019s crucial that every individual undergoes a proper victim screening and identification process to ensure that trafficking survivors receive the protection and justice they deserve, and that critical intelligence is secured to dismantle and prosecute these trafficking networks.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myanmar has become a hotspot for large-scale cyberscam operations that lure foreign workers with false promises of legitimate employment, only to trap them, confiscate their documents, and force them to engage in criminal online activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early this year, following the release of more than 9,000 victims from scamming compounds in Myanmar who crossed into Thailand, IJM Thailand mobilized a team in coordination with local non-profit organizations and Thai authorities. IJM staff supported victim identification and response efforts by providing translation services, assisting survivors, and working alongside the Thai government\u2019s Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs) and frontline NGOs throughout the screening and victim identification process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
