        "rendered": "<p>ANDHRA PRADESH, SOUTH ASIA \u2013 Latha had only been a survivor leader for a few months but \u2013 when she got her first opportunity to share about her life \u2013 she left her audience stunned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Years ago, Latha and her family were enslaved in an abusive rice mill in southern India. While her abusers were eventually acquitted in court, Latha has moved with strength through IJM\u2019s aftercare program and now lives in freedom in Andhra Pradesh. In late 2022, she joined her state\u2019s 800-person chapter of the Released Bonded Laborers Association (RBLA), a survivor peer group combating bonded labour and supporting each other&#8217;s recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January, Latha was invited to share about her journey with Labour Department officials from 26 districts of Andhra Pradesh, where IJM recently began a new anti-bonded labour program. These government leaders were generally aware of the issue of bonded labour but are less experienced in rescuing and rehabilitating survivors like Latha.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ijmhk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2023.01-Latha-Speech-1.jpeg_202301ADP_Latha-Speech-in-Andhra-Pradesh_Approved-for-Full-Use.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19273\" width=\"360\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijmhk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2023.01-Latha-Speech-1.jpeg_202301ADP_Latha-Speech-in-Andhra-Pradesh_Approved-for-Full-Use.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/ijmhk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2023.01-Latha-Speech-1.jpeg_202301ADP_Latha-Speech-in-Andhra-Pradesh_Approved-for-Full-Use-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/ijmhk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2023.01-Latha-Speech-1.jpeg_202301ADP_Latha-Speech-in-Andhra-Pradesh_Approved-for-Full-Use-9x12.jpeg 9w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Even so, this brave woman stunned them with the clarity of her personal story and with her hearty message of thanks for the work they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIt was your signature and your decision to act that saved me,\u201d Latha said. \u201cJust as you have led me to freedom, I pray that you are able to rescue others who are still in bondage. When you rescue them, I hope they too, like me, will be able to wear bangles instead of chains. I wish that they too can comb their hair and look beautiful like me. Rather than verbal abuse, I wish their ears get to wear earrings like me. It is my hope that they all learn what freedom is, just like me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overwhelmed by her emotional journey, one of the officials walked up to her and offered her some cash. With all humility, Latha gently refused. Instead, she expressed her gratefulness to the government stating that they had already given her a priceless gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMoney cannot give me what you have already given me,\u201d she shared. \u201cThe government has gifted me with lifelong freedom. I&#8217;m grateful to all who are a part of my freedom journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as the government attendees were in awe of Latha\u2019s vision, so too were IJM staff, blown away by her strength and courage. We look forward to seeing Latha and other survivor leaders grow in their leadership of the anti-trafficking movement in Andhra Pradesh \u2013 ensuring her beautiful words come true again and again.<\/p>",
